North of Berlin near Dixville Notch, the Balsams Wilderness ski area closed in 2011. Starting in 2019, there have been discussions on reopening the ski area with a planned expansion to make it the largest in the northeast. The full build-out of the proposed expansion would be 2,200 acres served by 22 lifts with a maximum descent of 1,900 feet.
To reach Balsams Wilderness from the south, head north on US93 over Franconia Notch to Exit #35. Follow SR3 to Colebrook. Head east on SR26 for 11 miles to Dixville Notch where Balsams Wilderness ski area is located.
Overall, Balsams Wilderness is the 1st most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 19 snowboarding resorts in New Hampshire.
