West of Truckee near Soda Springs at Donner Summit, the Sugar Bowl ski area has 80 runs open to snowboarding with a maximum vertical of 1,500 feet spread over 1,500 acres. This expansive and wide open ski area has some tight steeps and technical drops. If youre looking for adventure, try the super pipe dragon or take advantage of their open boundary policy and head down the 2,500 descend on the east face of Donner Peak down to Donner Lake.

On a pow-day, try Nancys Couloir or take the Disney Lift and traverse right for a drop down Strawberry Fields.

Better known for the snowboarding, this area is not known for its nightlife. Best bets are in Tahoe City (Pierce Street Annex, Pete & Peters, Naughty Dog) or Truckee (Tahoe Taps or Tourist Club or Moodys Lounge).

Overall, Sugar Bowl Resort is the 15th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 19 snowboarding resorts in California. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Sugar Bowl Resort including Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, Squaw Valley Resort, Kirkwood Ski Area, Northstar at Tahoe Ski Area, Sierra at Tahoe Ski Area and Boreal Ski Area.
