West of Truckee at Donner Summit, the Boreal Mountain Ski Area has 41 runs spread across 380 acres served by 6 lifts that access a maximum vertical descent of 500 feet. With over 400 inches of snowfall annually, it is popular with the snowboarding crew coming over from the Bay area since its the first resort on the highway. In addition to the deep snowpack, there's also a year-round indoor freestyle center.

To reach the snowboarding at Boreal Ski Area from San Francisco, head east on US80 for 175 miles and use the Boreal / Castle Peak exit. The closest airports are either Reno or Sacremento.

Overall, Boreal Mountain is the 17th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 19 snowboarding resorts in California. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Boreal Mountain including Kirkwood Ski Area, Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, Squaw Valley Resort, Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar at Tahoe Ski Area and Sierra at Tahoe Ski Area.
