Southwest of Zurich and south of Kandersteg, the Lotschental Lauchernalp Ski Area has 15 pistes totalling 33km that are served by 5 lifts accessing a maximum descent of 1100m. With limited base area services, this ski area is popular with day trippers coming from other nearby ski areas or the Rhone valley villages below. The family-friendly Lötschental Lauchernalp is best for beginner and intermediate snowboarders. With that said, experts in snowboarding will enjoy the extensive lift-accessed offpiste freeriding.
From the lower parking area in the Wiler valley, there is a cable car up to the mid-station at car-free Lauchernalp village, which is the main base. If the snow is good, it is possible to snowboard from Hockenhorngrat all the way down 14km to the parking in the Wiler Valley via Piste #1 which may be signed Talbfahrt nach Wiler.
To reach Lötschental Lauchernalp from Zurich, take the train to Gampel and then transfer to the bus up the valley. It's about a 3 hour journey.
Overall, Lotschental Lauchernalp is the 19th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 80 snowboarding resorts in Switzerland. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Lotschental Lauchernalp including Staldenried-Gspon, Aletsch Arena and Belalp-Blatten.
