Southwest of Zurich and southwest of Brig, the Staldenried-Gspon Ski Area has five runs served by 2 lifts accessing a descent of 300m. While the village of Gspon is very charming, the ski area is actually very small. It does provide access to hikeable backcountry terrain. The best Staldenried-Gspon snowboarding is normally in the months of February and March.

To reach the Staldenried-Gspon snowboarding, take the train to Brig/Visp. Then, change to the train to Stalden. The ski area accessible from the town of Stalden via a 2 person gondola located adjacent to the train station. The gondola is needed for upload to Gspon and for downloading. The gondola is required for heading up to the ski area and returning down from the ski area (no ski run down).
PRO TIP: The ski map seems to show a piste leading down from Gspon to Staldenreid. However, the line is really just a rodlenbahn.
Overall, Staldenried-Gspon is the 24th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 87 snowboarding resorts in Switzerland. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Staldenried-Gspon including Aletsch Arena, Lotschental Lauchernalp, Bellwald-Goms, Rosswald, Moosalp and Unterbaech.
