North of Queenstown and south of Wanaka, the Cardrona Alpine Resort ski area has 28 runs over 320 hectares served by four lifts accessing a maximum vertical drop of 390m.
If you are looking for some challenge, check out the steep chutes such as off Arcadia or the hidden chute off the Captains Chairlift. Or, you can try hiking the summit!
To reach the snowboarding at Cardrona Alpine Resort from Wanaka, head south on Cardrona Valley Road for 20km. The resort access road is on the right hand side about 1km north of Cardrona. Access from Queenstown can be sketchy in the winter. When snowboarding and freeriding internationally, it is important to get a travel insurance policy that covers emergency rescue, medical expense and evacuation. There are many destinations that will not initiate rescue or medical treatment without prior payment or proof of insurance. In many cases, the rescue fees, medical fees or evacuation to a reputable hospital can total tens of thousands of dollars. Plans such as GEOS SAR100 or IMG Patriot Travel Medical Insurance are well worth the per-trip cost of $130 to $200 USD.
Overall, Cardrona Ski Area is the 7th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 9 snowboarding resorts in New Zealand. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Cardrona Ski Area including Temple Cummins / Wanaka Backcountry, Coronet Peak Ski Area, Remarkables Ski Area and Treblecone Ski Area.
