South of Bern and northeast of Sion, the Anzere Ski Area has 24 runs totaling 50km served by 8 main lifts that access descent of 920m. This family-friendly ski area is very popular with solid intermediate snowboarders. But don't let that fool you completely - there are three beautiful ungroomed ski routes to explore, including Raphy and Tsalan off Pas De Maimbre summit and the Kunz off the Le Bate summit. The levels of difficulty ranges from 3 beginner to 14 intermediate to 4 difficult pistes.
Anzere is a purpose built ski area dating to the 1960's, so don't expect a charming, quaint Swiss village. On these south facing slopes, there's really only one lift heading up out of town, so you'll need to get in line early to avoid crowds and long wait times.
After a long morning of shredding, there are several good huttes to grab lunch up on the mountain. Make sure to head over the Le Restaurant des Rousses or to Le Tsalan.
• Family-friendly ski area.
• Several ski routes.
• Reliable snowpack.
• South-facing slopes melt fast.
• Uncharming villages.
• Expensive lodging and passes.
To reach the snowboarding in Anzere by train, use the station in Sion. Then, there are regular Post buses up to the village (35 minutes). Within the village of Anzere, there is a free ski bus that makes a loop connecting the lodging options with the lift. Alternately, there is also a bus down to Sierre train station.
PRO TIP: Should you need more runs, don't forget about nearby Crans Montana. While only about 10km linear distance, there is a Post bus connection via Lens that takes about 55 mintues.
Overall, Anzere is the 39th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 87 snowboarding resorts in Switzerland. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Anzere including Crans-Montana and Leukerbad.
