Southwest of Salzburg, the picturesque village of Ellmau (820m) makes a great base for exploring the SkiWelt ski region. The slopes immediately aroudn Ellmau are ideal for beginners and families.
SkiWelt is Austria's largest interconnected ski area linking the villages of Going, Ellmau, Scheffau, Soll, Hopfgarten, Westendorf, and Brixen im Thale. Not only is it the largest ski area, but Ski Welt is also touted as one of the most affordable ski areas in Austria There are a total of 279km of on piste skiing with 128 runs, 1 park, 93 lifts, and 160km of snowmaking. This ski area is one of the most accessible in Austria to German skiers as it is 20 minutes from the Kufstein boarder crossing and an hour from Munich. The area also holds good snow longer into the spring that other resorts in the area. This is a family oriented ski area with very few difficult runs.
Ski Welt is located 20 minutes from the German boarder in the mountains of the Wilder Kaiser and Hohe Salve, approximately 1 1/2 hours from Munich, 1 hour from Innsbruck, and 1 hour from Salzburg. Westendorf and Brixen im Thale are both accessed by train as are the nearby towns of Worgl and Kufstein.
After a morning of snowboarding at Ellmau, check out the Ellmauer Alm for lunch. At the end of the day, try the apres ski action at cafe Pub Memory. For an authentic local dinner, head over to Gasthof Lobewein. And, finally finish with some nightlife at the Otzi or Pub 66.
