North of Tokyo and northwest of Koriyama, the Alts Bandi Ski Resort has 29 courses totaling 30km is served by 12 lifts with a maximum vertical drop of 580m. The family-friendly Alts Bandi ski area is known for its glades and five terrain parks. The ski area is known to be quite crowded on the weekends.
The Alts Bandi ski area is at a low elevation, so the snow conditions may be variable - it is not a place for powder. Also, off-piste freeriding is not permitted and strictly enforced. This is more of a freestyler paradise. Luckily, the ski area is near both the Mount Bandai and Nekoma ski areas in case you need more variety.
To access the snowboarding at Alts Bandi Ski Resort, fly into Tokyo (NRT) and take the connecting trains to Inawashiro. Some hotels have a free shuttle from the train station. When coming from the Tokyo train station, some visitors use the Koriyama train station and use free resort buses to Alts Bandai (reservation required). Overall, the ski area is located about 280km north of Tokyo. Keep in mind that this is not a real traditional town - it is more of a tourist trap.
When snowboarding and freeriding internationally, it is important to get a travel insurance policy that covers emergency rescue, medical expense and evacuation. There are many destinations that will not initiate rescue or medical treatment without prior payment or proof of insurance. In many cases, the rescue fees, medical fees or evacuation to a reputable hospital can total tens of thousands of dollars. Plans such as GEOS SAR100 or IMG Patriot Travel Medical Insurance are well worth the per-trip cost of $130 to $200 USD.
Overall, Alts Bandi Ski Resort is the 17th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 22 snowboarding resorts in Japan.
