South of Jenbach and west of Kaltenbach, the Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach ski area has 37 lifts providing access to 171km of pistes. The ski area elevation ranges from 1,500m to 2,500m, and is situated well above Kaltenbach. While there is one run back to the Kaltenbach base area, most snowboarders uplift and downlift from the midstation.
The Hochfugen ski area is known for its off-piste freeride snowboarding zones. These zones provide a challenging experience for experts or those with guides. They have dedicated maps focusing on the zones, which include Kuchl, Marchkopf, Nase, Ostwand, and Vordere Pfuns.
The Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach ski area is actually served by two base areas including Kaltenbach and also Aschau-im-Zillertal. There are direct lift-interconnects over to Hochfugen. And, there are proposed lifts to provide a direct interconnect with Fugen Spieljoch ski area to the north.
To reach the snowboarding at Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach, take the train from Innsbruck or Munich to Jenbach. Then, transfer to the Zillertalbahn to head up the valley to Kaltenbach.
Overall, Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach is the 30th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 75 snowboarding resorts in Austria. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach including Hintertux, Mayrhofen, Hochfugen, Zell Am Ziller, Gerlos and Wald-Konigsleiten.
