South of Salzburg and northwest of Mittersill, the Mittersill - Pass Thurn ski area is part of the larger Kitzbuhel ski region. It is a less expensive back door to Kitzbuhel that is accessible via the Kitzbuhel Panoramabahn.
This section of the Kitzbuhel ski region is popular with snowboarders since it is at higher elevations and tends to have more reliable snow conditions. There are also excellent and extensive backcountry freeriding opportunties. There is good sidecountry to explore, including off the left side of piste 75A from the top of Zweitausender Lift on on the lower slopes of Klein Retienstein. If you are up for a real adventure, there is a nice ski route down from the bottom of the Baren Bad Kogel 1 lift leading down to Alte Wacht.
If you are looking for some challenging steeps, check out under the Zweitausender lift and also under the Tratenbach lift.
If you are looking for some terrain park action, there are two terrain parks along the Hangalm lift.
After a long morning of snowboarding, there are several good on-mountain huts for lunch including Barenbad Alm, Almstuberl and Sonnalm.
While you can access the slopes from up at Pass Thurn, the newer Panoramabahn gondolas up from Hollersbach provide easy access from the Pinzgau valley floor. There is also a dedicated train station for the gondola called the Hollersbach im Pinzgau Panoramabahn. And, there is a free ski bus up from Mittersill Marketplatz and Mittersill Bahn to Pass Thurn and on down to Kitzbuhel.
Overall, Mittersill-Pass Thurn is the 10th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 52 snowboarding resorts in Austria.
