East of Seoul in the Taebaek Mountains, the Phoenix Park ski area has 21 pistes served by 6 lifts accessing a maximum vertical of 400m. Bokwang Phoenix Snowpark is considered a snowboarders paradise for the region. Spread over 2 peaks, the ski area has extensive snowmaking since it’s at a pretty low elevation. The conditions can be icy most of the time. There are seven expert slopes, but they are all pretty short. There is an excellent terrain park worth checking out.
The area isn’t really known for much nightlife and that even includes the nearby town of PyeongChang. The Bokwang Phoenix Snowpark is located in the Gangwon Province about 180km to the east of Seoul. While it’s normally about a 2.5 hour drive, the heavy traffic on Friday and Sunday afternoons make it a much longer drive (up to 4 hours). There are plans for a high speed train to the area. Bokwang Phoenix Snowpark is the site of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics snowboarding events.
If you are planning to head to the ski area from Seoul by bus, most of the ski buses depart from the Jamsil Station. They depart very early in the morning (aka middle of the night). Also, keep in mind up at the resorts that many of the hotels use Korean-style mats on the floors for sleeping. If that’s not your bag, make sure to request a room with a real bed.
Overall, Bokwang Phoenix Snowpark is the 1st most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 15 snowboarding resorts in Korea. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Bokwang Phoenix Snowpark including Yongpyong Resort, Alpensia Resort and Welli Hilli Hyundai Ski Resort.
