Far southeast of Grenoble and east of Gap, the Foret Blanche Ski Domaine has 185km of pistes served by 50 lifts with a maximum vertical descent of 1,370m (4,500 feet). This family-friendly ski domaine links the villages of Vars and Risoul. While it is known for its reliable snow, it is also known for having many old, slow lifts. It's also known for its beginner and intermediate pistes, along with having six terrain parks. Keep in mind that the black pistes are really reds that just haven't been regularly groomed.
The Foret Blanche Ski Domaine is relatively unknown for its expansive backcountry freeriding options. There are 20 lift-accessed freeride lines down steep chutes that require under an hour of hiking. These lines average between 500 to 700m of vertical descent. Some of the best Foret Blanche Ski Domaine off-piste lines include La Virgule, Entonnoir, Petit Col, La Banane and The "Y". On flat light or adverse weather days, there are larch forest glades to explore, too.
For the freestyle snowboarders in your crew, Foret Blanche Ski Domaine has six terrain parks to session. The terrain parks include Park de Crevoux, L'Eyssina, Totem Park, Park des Ecrins, Kid Park and Girly Park.
When you are ready for some nightlife, the best option is the Relex Club or Le Morgan in Risoul.
Note: the villages of Vars and Risoul are located a long way from the nearest airport in Lyon resulting in long transfer times.
PRO TIP: The ski area is located south of nearby Montgenevre which could be work a day of snowboarding.
Overall, Vars-Risoul is the 33rd most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 50 snowboarding resorts in France.
