Northeast of Santa Fe and Taos Pueblo, the Taos Ski Valley has 110 runs spread across 1,294 acres that are served by 15 lifts with a maximum vertical descent of 3,250 feet. With over 300 inches of snowfall annually, the ski area is known by snowboarders to be pretty snow-sure. The runs ranging in difficulty from 25% easy to 25% moderate to 50% difficult.
With the addition of the new Kachina Peak Lift, the ski area now boast 50% of the terrain as rated expert. Known for the best snowboarding at Taos, the Kachina Peak Lift heads up to the summit of Kachina Peak (12,481 feet) and provides access to a bowl littered with double black diamond gladed chutes. Up on the peak, start with Main Street before traversing over to K-Chutes, which are numbered east to west as K6 to K1.
On a powder day, you'll want to start by heading up Chair #2. Start hiking up to Highline Ridge and West Basin Ridge. From Highline Ridge, try dropping down Corner Chute or Tresckow. From West Basin Ridge, most locals like dropping into Stauffenberg Chute or Zdardsky Chute.
If you are looking for some freestyle action, try checking out the Maxies Terrain Park under the Lift #7.
For some apres ski action after a long day of riding, try checking out the The Bavarian Restaurant slope-side at the base of Lift 4 or the Stray Dog Cantina.
To reach the snowboarding at Taos ski area from Santa Fe, head north on US285/US84 for about 70 miles. Continue north on SR150 for 15 miles up to the ski area. Overall, it is about a two hour drive.
