Southeast of Bormio, the Santa Caterina Valfurva ski area has 12 pistes served by six lifts that access a maximum vertical descent of 1040m. The ski area is served by two adjacent lift bases including Santa Caterina Impianti and Santa Caterina Valfurva. For experience backcountry snowboarders, there is a remote off-piste line on the backside of the ski area that starts by skinning up Mount Sobretta and then descends to teh Valfurva road where a bus provides a return to the ski area. The best Santa Caterina Valfurva snowboarding can be found during the months of January and February.

There is a ski bus interconnecting Santa Caterina ski area with the Cima Biana/Bormio 3000 ski area (25 min) and the Cima Piazzi/San Colombano ski area (45 min). The bus runs infrequently so make sure to check the schedule ahead of time.

To reach the snowboarding at Santa Caterina Valfurva ski area from Milan, follow the SS36 Milano-Lecco-Colico. Then continue along the SS38 dello Stelvio to Tirano, Bormio and Santa Caterina Valfurva.

To reach the Santa Caterina Valfurva by public transport, there is a connection of train and bus from either St Moritz or Milan (via Tirano). The quaint village of Santa Caterina is located at a deadend valley in the winter and is considered to be on the plain side.

PRO TIP: The Livigono ski area is located to the northwest of Santa Caterina Valfurva. There is a bus from Santa Caterina Valfurva to the Trepalle base area of Livigo that takes 60 minutes. The Alta Valtellina ski pass covers Livigno, Bormio Ski 3000, Cima Piazzi and Santa Caterina ski areas.

Overall, Santa Caterina Valfurva is the 53rd most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 57 snowboarding resorts in Italy. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Santa Caterina Valfurva including Bormio Ski 3000 and Cima Piazzi.
