  Vialattea, Piedmont, Italy

West of Turin, the Sauze d'Oulx ski area has 30 pistes totaling 80km that are served by 15 lifts with a maximum vertical of 1000m. The best Sauze d'Oulx snowboarding can typically be found during the months of January and February.

The Sauze d'Oulx ski domaine is part of the massive Vialattea ski arena. The Vialattea consists of several lift-interconnected ski domaines including Sestriere, Pragelato, Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana, Calviere and Montgenevre in France. Overall, Vialattea offers 238 pistes served by 70 lifts accessing a maximum vertical descent of 1500m. One way to explore the entire Vialattea is by following the 70km Giro Della Vialattea ski safari route that loops through all of the ski domaines in the ski arena.

Also known as the Milky Way ski arena, Vialattea is typically pretty quiet on the weekdays and slammed on the weekends with day trippers coming up from Turin. While it is recommended to snowboard here on the weekdays to avoid long lift lines and crowded slopes, the apres ski scene is absolutely dead. So, if you're looking for a party scene, you'll want to include at least a Friday or Saturday evening.

To reach the snowboarding at Sauze d'Oulx by air, fly into either Lyon airport (LYS) or Turin airport (TRN). Both airports are served by European airlines with few intercontinental flights. From the Lyon airport, you need to take the metro train downtown to the main train station. From the Turin airport, you either need to take the metro downtown and then a bus to the main train station or take a bus directly from the airport to the main train station. From the main train stations, there is a high-speed TGV train between Lyon to Turin that stops in Oulx and Briancon. There is regular bus service from Oulx to Sauze d'Oulx (5 min), Sestriere (30 min) or Montgenevre, and there is regular bus service from Briancon to Montegenevre (12km).

Overall, Oulx is the 56th most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 57 snowboarding resorts in Italy. Several of the better snowboarding resorts are nearby Oulx including Sestriere and Montgenevre.
